Contact providers, then reconfirm

Advance notes can help, but schedules, catering suppliers and staff change. Reconfirm at check-in and immediately before food is served. Bring suitable backup food where transport and customs rules allow.

Buffets need a different conversation

A label beside a tray does not account for serving utensils moved by guests, spills or foods replenished from a shared preparation area. Ask whether staff can prepare a fresh portion using checked ingredients and clean equipment.

Control the handoff

Identify the meal for the allergic traveler, confirm who prepared it and prevent plates from being swapped. For children, an adult should retain responsibility for all checks.

  • Record provider contacts and confirmation numbers.
  • Keep medication and safe snacks accessible.
  • Avoid relying on a special-meal sticker as the only verification.
  • Recheck the plate with the person who brings it.
