Do not transfer assumptions between countries
A product that appears familiar may have a different recipe, supplier or label. The allergens that must be emphasized also vary by jurisdiction. Check the ingredient list, allergen statement and precautionary language on the package sold in that country.
Use several checks
Compare the local allergen word with the full ingredients. Look for stickers placed over the original label, multipack wrappers and products sold without the outer package. When anything is unclear, ask a fluent person or the manufacturer rather than relying on camera translation alone.
- Confirm the exact product and flavor.
- Read the full ingredient list and allergen statement.
- Check precautionary cross-contact wording.
- Recheck every new package, even if previously purchased.
Restaurant food is different
Packaged-food labeling rules do not necessarily describe what a restaurant must provide, and a package label does not describe what happens after it enters a shared kitchen. Continue the cross-contact conversation.
